Obesity is it genetic?

Updated: Dec 13, 2019

It´s December! And soon it´s #January and January often comes with #newyearsresolution that might be about getting a #healtier #lifestyle or going to the #gym and most of these come with a #goal to lose weight.

But many people also feel like "there is no point because it´s my #dna" and that is causing me not to lose weight NO MATTER how hard I try. BUT WAIT! I do not believe that you don´t lose weight because of your DNA. And I don´t believe you don´t lose weight because you are lazy! I KNOW there is a factor here causing a lot of problems!

And you will understand what it is after reading this blogpost! I was asking myself a question a long time ago when I first started researching this and losing weight myself. Looking at other people that lost weight. Studying diets like #vegan #keto #carnivore #caloriecounting and #bodybuilder diet and what I found is a more complex picture that is actually very logical and an easy fix IF you know what you need to do!

Is the overweight due to your DNA or is it more environmental?

If your mother ate unhealthy or just lacking a high intake of Omega 3 while being pregnant and breastfeeding, yes you are more likely to be born with cell walls that had an imbalance between your Omega 6 & Omega 3 ratio. And if your parents had a lifestyle that included a lot of #vegetableoil and limited #fish intake. Then it is a big risk your unbalance in your cells kept on being high or even getting worse in your childhood, most likely resulting in some kind of health problem. Maybe you didn´t have a problem with your weight during that time, but it could be a problem with #allergy, #astma, #eczema, #diabetestype2, #hormonal issues, #anxiety, #concentration problems and so on. BUT an imbalance doesn´t always show... It´s not until it already has gone too far, that it is causing the body so much stress that it starts showing #symptoms. And if you are looking at scientific reports we can read about this imbalance corresponds with #overweight. Why? Let me explain:

Cell membrane built up with Omega 6 and Omega 3
Cell membrane

The cell walls are built up with Omega 3 and Omega 6, which are both essentials. An imbalance is causing issues. I am going to tell you what´s happening with your cells when they are built up with too much Omega 6. But in order to understand that, you need to understand the cell walls = cell membranes and why we got them! What Do Membranes Do?

  • Cell membranes serve as barriers and gatekeepers in order to keep what´s inside the cell in, and what´s outside out.

  • It protects and secure the functionality of the cell. - Having hormones attach to the hormone receptors on the cell membrane, and that should cause a reaction to release signal molecules that are communicating with other cells, our DNA or making another chain reaction happening.

  • Cell membranes are semi-permeable, which means that some molecules can diffuse across the lipid bilayer but others cannot. - Including letting nutrition into the cell. - Letting waste from ATP production and toxins out of the cell.

Having too much Omega 6 in the cell membrane results in:

  • Cell membranes get harder, the more omega 6 it contains. - Causing nutrition not being able to get into the cell = causing problems with metabolism. - Waste and toxins can´t get out. - Toxins build up.

  • The cell becomes inflammatory causing: - The body to get high oxidative stress - Chronic inflammation - that is the root of most health problems. - Hormone receptors are not able to function properly.

"In the past three decades, total fat and saturated fat intake as a percentage of total calories has continuously decreased in Western diets, while the intake of omega-6 fatty acid increased and the omega-3 fatty acid decreased, resulting in a large increase in the omega-6/omega-3 ratio from 1:1 during evolution to 20:1 today or even higher. This change in the composition of fatty acids parallels a significant increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4808858/

And today about 99% of America and 95% of Europe have an imbalance between Omega 6 and Omega 3 in their cells. We got about 37 trillion cells! About 25 trillion of those are small red blood cells. They are changed out every 120 days! BUT if they don´t have the right building stones they are changed out with an unbalance every single time.

On average Americans have a balance that is 25:1 and Europe have on average 15:1. THAT IS FAR AWAY from the 1:1 we had during evolution and before we became farmers! Omega 3 = Anti inflammatory Omega 6 = Inflammatory Equal amounts 1:1 = neutral. The science world says 3:1 or below. WHO says we should stay under 4:1 in order to have good cardiovascular health. Nordic Council of Ministers for Health have in their Dietary guidelines 5:1 Everyone knows about this issue and know it´s tied to health problems. Recommendations differ. I was 9,4:1... Even with healthy eating habits. Even with omega 3 intake, almost daily for 6 years. I choose now to stay under 2,5:1 cause that is beneficial to me, after reading scientific reports that shows I have less chance of getting the same cancer as my Mom has had twice. And my Granpa died of it. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/

CONCLUSION: If you want to become more healthy! You should focus on your food! Your body has the ability to heal under the right circumstances! So if you need help losing weight you should get your cells in balance and you will most likely need an Omega 3 supplement of high quality in order to do so. These changes will increase your cells to function better (including metabolism, regulate hormones, ability to detox, lower oxidative stress, lower inflammation). Most likely you will notice a big health benefit from doing these changes. Even I needed to change out the brand of Omega 3 I was using in order to achieve a healthier Cell balance and experience the benefit of not needing my allergy pills every time I eat fruit, to just mention one of them. Follow me on FB to get updated when the new blog post is out! I will go thru what you should eat and not eat, in order to promote a healthy cell membrane! But until then you should go to your pantry and find all your oils! IF YOU GOT vegetable oil, corn oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower oil and other oils that come from things that grow - throw them away right away! WHAT FAT TO USE: Olive oil (not high temperatures) Coconut oil Almond oil BUTTER (High fat, grass-fed, organic)

I´m sharing this picture of me. It was August 2014 and I was pregnant. I had not been physically active for 3 years due to being busy studying, being a fulltime mum and running a company. I was tired and exhausted. Faking a smile for my mother inlaw. Waiting for the pregnancy to end! After the baby was out the overweight stuck with me for a long time. With me understanding more about the body and implement workouts together with supplements and a healthy diet, it started to change and today I´m very happy at being able to look back at these pictures knowing I decided to take control over my health! All it took was knowledge of how my body function and how what I could change for it to respond to what I was trying to accomplish!
